How can we facilitate collaboration?

What's been happening in the NDB Community ✨

Published 3 months ago • 2 min read

Hi there, Reader

Is it too late to say Happy New Year?

Hopefully not since this is the very first of 12 newsletters we plan to send you this year to give you a small peek 👀 into what’s happening in our beautiful community and share some of the learnings we are collecting together.

Speaking of learnings, January was marked by great ones.

Grand opening

First, at the official opening of NDB we once again learned how our community is not just a collection of individuals but a shared journey.

The response from both familiar faces and those we hadn't seen in a while was truly heartening. The sense of unity and the stories shared during this gathering resonated deeply.

Facilitator of the Year 🥂

We celebrated Etrit Shkreli, our nominated Facilitator of the Year. Is always inspiring to see the community recognising each other’s work and motivating everyone to show up for themselves and the others.

Exploring Motivation

Speaking of Motivation, January also marked the start of a new way of discovering new and bending existent knowledge to the fullest - Monthly Themes. And conveniently so, this month’s theme was MOTIVATION and let’s share a bit about what we uncovered here.

Key learnings of the month

  • Intention matters: When working with motivation in facilitation, it matters why and how we are using it. A good way is to use motivation as a design aspect to create a space tailored for participation to generate towards an open outcome. A bad way is to use the motivation to stir them towards a pre-defined outcome. That would mean manipulating the group through facilitation methods.
  • Our motivations are as diverse as we are: We spoke a lot about different motivation types and how those need different triggers and approaches.
  • Motivation is not equal to Engagement: We cannot measure a participants motivation by their level of engagement. Motivation is deeper and more connected to a persons why. To access that we need to spent time on sense making during our sessions.
  • Motivation beyond the session is System-dependent: Especially when working with teams that need to keep working on the content/topic of the session mid-/long-term, it is important to ensure that they find an environment that is ready for the outcomes. There is nothing more debilitating then coming out of a workshop with high motivation and then being shut down by the next manager.

Finding Your Facilitation Signature

Wednesday February 14th, 8pm CET

In a competitive world with so many voices, how do you find your own and make it stand out?
How do you make yourself known for your uniqueness? How do you make prospects look for YOU 🤔.

First of all, how do you even find that one thing that only YOU can bring to the table?

In this Live Event, Myriam Hadnes and Thomas Lahnthaler will uncover the power behind having a signature, how to differentiate it from a "style" and why many of us shy away from working on our personal branding.

Ready to start a journey of finding your signature?

How can we facilitate collaboration?

Dr Myriam Hadnes

I'm a recovering academic who uses her insights from behavioural economics to develop methods that facilitate collaboration. In my weekly newsletter, I share the summary of my latest interview on the "workshops work" podcast along with an application of facilitation as a life and leadership skill.

Dear Reader, Though each workshop is unique because we are dealing with humans, our role as facilitators can sometimes feel repetitive and, dare I say, even dull. A recent acquaintance of mine made a poignant observation: "As a facilitator, it's rare to improve unless collaborating." This rings true! I'd go as far as to say that trying new approaches or experimenting is equally crucial for our improvement. Both situations demand stepping out of our comfort zones, or else we risk stagnation....

Dear Reader, Last week, I hosted a short workshop with the marvellous Thomas Lahnthaler, and the interest in the subsequent LinkedIn post was amazing - never have I received almost 30,000 impressions and over 360 reactions on a post. I think that we hit a curiosity nerve! We offered a list of facilitation styles and preferences, each on a spectrum between two extreme statements such as: “No structure, no outcome” vs “structure kills creativity” or “The niche facilitator: One method set will...
