How can we facilitate collaboration?

Facilitating self-growth: where do you seek yours? 🌱 | Episode 264 on Play & Conflict

Dear Reader,

Though each workshop is unique because we are dealing with humans, our role as facilitators can sometimes feel repetitive and, dare I say, even dull.

A recent acquaintance of mine made a poignant observation: "As a facilitator, it's rare to improve unless collaborating." This rings true! I'd go as far as to say that trying new approaches or experimenting is equally crucial for our improvement. Both situations demand stepping out of our comfort zones, or else we risk stagnation.

Co-facilitation is also the best medicine against repetition and boredom.

But while we are experts in collaboration, co-facilitation remains one of the biggest challenges to most of us! It requires us to navigate another layer of group dynamics: the interplay between ourselves and our fellow facilitators.

In my journey of honing my facilitation skills and evolving as a facilitator, I've found that I learn the most from collaborative projects, such as the online courses I co-host with NDB colleagues. In these sessions, I'm pushed to the edges of my comfort zone as we must synchronise our efforts more thoroughly beforehand and during the sessions> And, they encourage me to rethink my methods, and urge me to embrace new approaches.

While the NDB community serves as a platform for experimentation, finding new co-facilitators, and a wellspring of inspiration that keeps my passion for facilitation alive, I'm curious about your experiences. Please reply to this email to share your insights, and I'll gladly pass them along to our subscribers 🙂

How do you play? 🪁

As we grow up, we become serious adults with serious jobs, and we often feel that we must depart from the frivolous, playful ways of our childhood. But play is all around us — if we allow it — and well into adulthood, it continues on its journey of teaching us about the world.

So let us warm your ears and fire up your playful side in this week’s Fireside Conversation with my immensely talented trio of Lily Higgins, Pauline McNaulty and Jules Gilleland and accompanied by a live audience from the NDB Community! Lily, Jules and Pauline are returning guests on the podcast and true masters of play. So, it was a veritable treat to hear their unique perspectives, how they engineer playful experiences and use them as tools to diffuse conflict, form connections, and sense-make.

Find out about:

  • Lily, Pauline and Jules’ multifaceted definitions of play and why it is simultaneously a mindset, tactic, strategy, and metaphor
  • The complexities and contexts of play as a facilitation tool
  • How play can be used to navigate conflict, creating a safe space that diffuses risk
  • How play can help us challenge our stories, and encourage us to see new perspectives
  • The difference between purposeful play, play as the experience itself, and play without agenda

Dear Reader, Last week, I hosted a short workshop with the marvellous Thomas Lahnthaler, and the interest in the subsequent LinkedIn post was amazing - never have I received almost 30,000 impressions and over 360 reactions on a post. I think that we hit a curiosity nerve! We offered a list of facilitation styles and preferences, each on a spectrum between two extreme statements such as: “No structure, no outcome” vs “structure kills creativity” or “The niche facilitator: One method set will...

Dear Reader, Yesterday, I hosted an in-person leadership workshop and the client and the participants had all warned me that they love to speak, have big personalities and egos, and that I will have to be strong and committed if I want to keep them on track. No pressure, then! But to be honest? It turned out to be one of the easiest workshops I have ever hosted, despite the fact that I was on strong painkillers that stopped working two hours before the end. (Yes, I am writing this newsletter...
