How can we facilitate collaboration?

Reading the signals, changing our ways 🚥 | Episode 259 about Inclusive Leadership

Published 2 months ago • 3 min read

Dear Reader,

But we have always done it that way!!

How often have we heard that phrase and cringed? Too many times. Last week, I woke up realising that I had fallen, unknowingly, into that exact same sneaky trap.

If you’ve been a reader of my newsletter for a while, you’ll know that I announce that week’s podcast episode and share the 1-page summary with you, with the podcast ready to be released several hours later (in Europe it would be online and in your ears the next day).

Initially, the podcast came out earlier, so that by the time my newsletter made it into your inbox, you’d have instant access to this week’s facilitation goodness! But for convenience, I pushed the time and pressed the podcast release button at midnight, never adjusting the time of the newsletter...

The result? Every week, I receive an email from a subscriber asking why they get a 404 when they click the link to listen to the podcast. I am sorry, newsletter readers!

It was only last week that I realised I could change that rather easily; I said goodbye to my last 404, which is why you might be reading this email later than usual! I have received the signals, implicitly, but they were there all along, and I unconsciously decided to ignore them.

Now I wonder what else I continue doing, because I have always done it that way?

To pick up the breadcrumb I left in my last email:

This is one of the micro-changes that has emerged from spending five weeks on the other side of the world. Being in a different time zone, I have realised that my perception here in Europe is only one way of experiencing things. Being Down Under really has flipped perspective upside down for the better!

And now, take a moment to think of one thing you have always done in a certain way, and how you might change it?

🎙 Meanwhile, on the podcast…

Performative flags, DEI promises, and public commitment statements – they’re everywhere. But how many organisations and leaders know what it takes to lead with genuine inclusivity?

My guest this week Steve Yacovelli, has been passionately flying the flag of inclusive leadership for nearly 30 years. From software facilitator, to setting sail with Disney Cruise Line as their leadership development consultant, his consultancy Top Dog Learning Group is now on a mission to make the workplace a place of belonging for all.

Steve is vibrant, charming and brings with him that familiar Disney sparkle we all know and love. It was a total joy to be a student in his Pride Leadership classroom this week, as we dissect DEI, the definition of diversity, and what six key LGBTQ+ values can teach us about being a more effective, compassionate leader. There is so much to learn, think about, and put into practice in episode 259 – enjoy!

Find out about:

  • Learnings from Steve’s 25 years in the leadership, development, change management, and diversity and inclusion consulting space
  • What it means to lead with a Pride Leadership mindset
  • Why inclusive leadership must go beyond the superficial celebration of the DEI acronym to foster belonging for all
  • The five dimensions of diversity and what it means for leadership
  • Why a feedback-rich culture is critical to creating belonging in the workplace
  • Why learning in a group of 3 can have greater success than learning in pairs

Dear Reader, Though each workshop is unique because we are dealing with humans, our role as facilitators can sometimes feel repetitive and, dare I say, even dull. A recent acquaintance of mine made a poignant observation: "As a facilitator, it's rare to improve unless collaborating." This rings true! I'd go as far as to say that trying new approaches or experimenting is equally crucial for our improvement. Both situations demand stepping out of our comfort zones, or else we risk stagnation....

Dear Reader, Last week, I hosted a short workshop with the marvellous Thomas Lahnthaler, and the interest in the subsequent LinkedIn post was amazing - never have I received almost 30,000 impressions and over 360 reactions on a post. I think that we hit a curiosity nerve! We offered a list of facilitation styles and preferences, each on a spectrum between two extreme statements such as: “No structure, no outcome” vs “structure kills creativity” or “The niche facilitator: One method set will...
